NY bill would provide tax credit for open source contributors

This has been proposed in NY state several times since at least 2009. These were apparently inspired by a 2006 report proposing the concept.

I’m generally not a fan of tax credits (they favor those with power among other problems) but a paltry tax credit for open source expenses could be a marker of progress (I think large entities aligned with commons-based production need to become powerful) nonetheless.

I think even a tiny credit or rebate sends good signals about public policy commons priority. It also means nice things, such as developers doing their taxes being asked by the wizard “did you spend money contributing to open source this year” or similar question, which has value on a cultural impact level, I expect.
